The Inside Spill
This week: the debut of AUX, a few musicians get richer and have you seen The Most Serene Republic’s gear?
Move over MTV, I want my Aux!
At 9 pm on Oct. 1, AUX will make it’s debut on Rogers Cable channel 107. Featuring original programming such as AUX Live, HARD and AUX Chart, along with other programs like Soft Focus (produced by VBS.tv), AUX marks the first time a Canadian online channel has made the jump to the tube. Music videos will also fill time slots along with other original programs including MasterTracks, Band Foto, ExploreMusic with Alan Cross, Strange Notes hosted by George Pettit (Alexisonfire), Alt.Sessions, and CBC Radio 3’s R3TV.
Not Quite Serene Republic
The Most Serene Republic was robbed. The Milton, Ont. band had their gear stolen after a show in Vancouver on Sept. 27. The band made a posting about it on their Facebook fan page (including photos of the missing gear) and a list of the equipment missing was made available on Stillepost. If anyone has any information about the instruments, they are asked to contact chris@arts-crafts.ca.
Canadian musicians 20K richer
What do Fucked Up, Dan Mangan and Alexisonfire all have in common? Other than thinking Joel Plaskett should be a rich man, not much. But last week, all three artists went home with giant cheques.
Post-hardcore punk band Fucked Up took home the fourth annual Polaris Music Prize for their album, The Chemistry of Common Life, claiming the $20,000 prize. And yes, Fucked Up’s Pink Eyes (Damian Abraham) stripped down to his underwear during the band’s performance. Pink Eyes joked that he thought Plaskett had won. Metric had a post-award show meltdown on Twitter, posting, “Wow, Pop-Core takes the Polaris prize! Surprise!” followed by a slight retraction, “Ok ok everybody relax...its more Psych-Core than Pop-Core. Either way, what's not to love?”
Previous Polaris winners include Caribou, Patrick Watson and Final Fantasy.
Whereas Sirius is the main sponsor for the Polaris—which is voted by critics—XM Radio also announced the winners for the Verge Music Awards last week. The awards, voted by fans online (with an appointed jury deciding ties), saw Dan Mangan taking Artist of the Year and Alexisonfire winning Album of the Year. Both Mangan and Alexisonfire went home with a cool $25,000 each and also thanked Plaskett for putting out a great album this year.
With apologies to The Simpsons, this only leads to one thing for the three artists: Give Plaskett the cheque!
Winter Gloves set to release digital album
On Oct. 6, Montreal band Winter Gloves will release a digital-only compliment to their debut album, About a Girl. The new album, A Way to Celebrate, is a collection of remixes, live takes and just about everything the band could think of, including a recording in a train station. A very limited physical copy will be available at the band’s shows when they tour Western Canada and the U.S. with Thunderheist in November.
For now, here’s “Invisible (ease v Remix)” from A Way to Celebrate.

Dave Stewart to address CMW delegates
Canadian Music Week has announced that Annie Lennox’s partner in crime from Eurythmics, Dave Stewart, will give the keynote speech during the 2010 CMW festival on March 12. Having worked with tons of musicians including Bono, Brian Ferry and Tom Petty, Stewart even won a Golden Globe for Best Original Song while working with Mick Jagger on the soundtrack for the Jude Law film Alfie. While March may still be a while away, fans will surely have “sweet dreams” in the meantime.

Local musician launches iPhone app (Tuesday May 19th)
Set lists have just gotten a lot easier thanks to Toronto musician Jeff Butler. The part-time player and SOCAN songwriter has developed Set List PRO, a new application available for the iPhone, which allows musicians to store and arrange their set lists. The app can also keep track of the length of songs and is perfect for musicians trying to cram as many tunes as they can into an hour-long set. The list can also be e-mailed to other band members or tech crew or even their fans. Scribbling down on napkins five minutes before the show is now a thing of the past. Set List PRO is available at the iPhone app store for $1.99.
